The Japan Toy Museum is located in a verdant rural setting about 10 kilometers north of the city of Himeji, known throughout the world for its beautiful castle. The museum is housed in six traditional whitewashed warehouses with tasteful folkcraft interiors. It has a collection of more than 80,000 items, including Japanese folk toys and the toys sold at cheap sweet shops, as well as toys and dolls from some 140 countries around the world. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, special and seasonal exhibits are held in buildings 1 and 6. At this delightful museum you will encounter nostalgic toys from childhood, along with unusual toys and dolls from around the world. Looking, however, is just part of the museum. Special play corners allow visitors of all ages to enjoy both handling toys and playing with them. The museum was founded in 1974. Thanks to its physical scale and the depth of its collection, the museum has become a model for toy museums in Japan. .
